Olivia Rodrigo, the pop sensation who took the world by storm with her debut album Sour, is ready to share more of her music with her fans. The 20-year-old singer-songwriter has announced that her second studio album, titled GUTS, will be released on September 8, 2023.
GUTS is the follow-up to Sour, which was released in May 2021 and became one of the best-selling albums of the year. Sour spawned three Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles: “Drivers License”, “Deja Vu”, and “Good 4 U”. The album also earned Rodrigo three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Pop Vocal Album, and Pop Solo Performance.
Rodrigo revealed the title and release date of GUTS on her social media platforms on June 26, 2023. She also shared the album artwork, which shows her lying on the ground, biting her thumb and wearing four silver rings that spell out the title of the record. The background is a deep purple color, similar to Sour’s cover.
“For me, this album is about growing pains and trying to figure out who I am at this point in my life,” Rodrigo said in a statement. “I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20 — it was such an intense period of awkwardness and change. I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully the album reflects that.”
Rodrigo also announced that the lead single from GUTS will be “Vampire”, which will be released on June 30, 2023. The song is described as a reflection of Rodrigo’s “increased maturity and bold confidence”. Rodrigo reunited with her Sour producer Dan Nigro for GUTS, which promises to showcase more of her musical versatility and lyrical honesty.
“So excited about this new album and this new chapter,” Rodrigo wrote on her Instagram Story. “I can’t thank you guys enough for all of your support and enthusiasm. Making this album was very daunting, very fun, and very fulfilling. I can’t wait for it to be yours.”
GUTS is available to pre-save on Spotify and Apple Music. Physical copies — CDs, cassettes and vinyl records — can be pre-ordered on Rodrigo’s website.
